About Henry McCurtis

I am a psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, with a specialty in addiction psychiatry. I have maintained an integrative psychiatry practice based on diagnostic assessment and treatment guided by biological, psychological, social, and behavioral paradigms since 1978. A developmental orientation toward understanding human behavior guides my clinical perspective. This is influenced by a special interest in attachment styles and their impact on interpersonal conflict in families and couples.

I have a keen interest in the phase of life problems resulting in major transitions in development. Transitions such as the passage from adolescents to young adulthood, marriage, divorce, mid life adjustments, retirement, and grief and bereavement are a special interest of mine. A psychoanalysis perspective informs my approach to elucidating the experiences of the past that influence the perspective in the here and now motivating one to think, feel, and act in predictable patterns that influence agency, identity, empathy, and intimacy.

I have a multicultural sensitivity developed in the crucible of the rural South during the sunset of Jim Crow and the dawn of the civil rights movement. This sensitivity was crystalized in the academic environment of a historically black college during this intense period of political activism and social change. The perspective that motivates me to discern the complex factors forging the personal and group identity aspects of personality that determine how we think, act, and feel was refined by years of clinical practice, teaching, and supervising psychiatrists and other mental health professionals in the greater New York area.

Dr. Henry McCurtis and I shared a church membership, however at the time of a need with assistance for my mother who was schizophrenic, I did not know him. However when he heard that she was being committed but needed extended care as she had been off meds for sometime and she was a senior, he intervened and had her transferred to a psychiatric facility where she would get the care that she needed. She thrived for seven years following a two month hospital stay. He later assisted me with getting the visiting nurse program to provide her monthly injections of Haldol. When mother died, Dr, McCurtis lead a bereavement group sponsored by the church that I participated in. Following the eight week group sessions, I entered into individual therapy with him for a period of one year. His support and direction were exceptional in giving me the tools to understand, heal and move forward after so many years of enmeshment with my mother's illness. It's been six years since my mother's death and I am doing very well in large part because I received therapy at the right time from the right therapist for my need. I am very grateful for Dr. McCurtis' insights and compassionate giving spirit.See MoreRead Less"

Dr. Mc Curtis is a magician. I call him a magician because he has a gift in which, as a distinguished scientist and while maintaining the fundamentals of psychiatry, he has the unique ability to trust a greater, universal intelligence, (spiritual, if you will) to work through him. Without you realizing it, Dr. McCurtis has put you in the driver seat of your own healing. The combination of his great compassion for the human condition, his keen social consciousness and his on going curiosity makes him unusually insightful, creative and sensitive. The atmosphere he creates allows one to feel the confidence to open up and explore those areas of oneself we often fear. Together, one can work with Dr. McCurtis to devise your own special plan for healing. He is open to new considerations - outside the box. Every time I have had a session with him I experience a self (or social) revelation and that is what I call magic.
I have been a long time patient of Dr. McCurtis and he has helped me to understand and navigate my emotional challenges. And most importantly, he has helped me to truly love, respect and appreciate myself with humility and unapologetically.

Dr. McCurtis is a very conscientious, scholarly, and entirely selfless physician. He sees the person as the whole, as a culmination of their personality, background, education, and life experiences that have brought them to this moment. I got the special opportunity to work with Dr. McCurtis very closely in a medical mission in Sierra Leone where I aided him as his medical assistant as he saw over 150 patients over the course of the week. There he acted as a mentor and an model of exemplary patient care. He really touched people's lives in a deep way primarily because he took his time with his patients, getting to know them as a person, and coming up with solutions that would help them heal over time. For example, he formed a group therapy session for victims of war tragedies and sat with them on their first session as they bonded over deep-seated anxieties over shared experiences. He is ever meticulous, not looking for just one solution to the problem, but trying out different approaches to see which one will best fit his patient's needs. I would highly recommend Dr. McCurtis to all my friends and family members.See MoreRead Less"

He's simply the best. Prior to meeting Dr. McCurtis I worked with professionals who provided adequate support for me and my family while I was on a quest for the best. During a stressful time in my life, managing family and career, I began losing my self. As an avid reader, on my journey a a growing Christian, I believed in the power of self-reflection. Dr. McCurtis was able to help others around me understand and respect my journey without feeling that something was being taken from them. Dr. McCurtis stands out from other professionals because he has a genuine sense of caring for the well-being of whole person. He's not all talk and he's helped me to take action in areas of my life that I had considered giving up on. The fact that he is African-American makes him more of a treasure. My family members and I able to have discussions with "Doc" that many other professionals just did not understand. He is not only a psychiatrist but an educator and a historian. I am grateful to report that Dr. Henry L. McCurtis has ministered to my family's and friends' mental health for well over a decade. And, for his thorough, steadfast, cutting edge evaluation protocols and keen insight, we are healthier, happier and more highly functional than some of us ever believed we might be.
From accurately diagnosing and prescribing effective treatments for depression and other disorders, to supporting our making healthier life choices, each of us Dr. McCurtis has cared for have been more productive within our respective careers and communities.
For my own part, under Dr. McCurtis's care, I was able to recognize and come to terms with my alcohol and substance dependencies, and replace those maladaptive behaviors with an appropriate treatment plan to arrest my depression. I have since excelled in career pursuit and, in my late fifties, have set about another.

I worked with Dr. McCurtis on The Collaborative Family Initiative Program at Friends of Island Academy.

CFI was a discharge planning and reentry initiative that provided immediate mental health treatment,
psychiatry, and family-focused supports to youngsters with mental health needs returning to the
community from secure and non-secure detention group homes.
/> Not only did Dr. McCurtis provide crucial mental health services for youth under CFI , the initiative also built capacity in New York City’s mental health infrastructure which left the City better equipped to serve court-involved youth and families.

Dr. McCurtis' efforts not only reunited many families throughout the New York City, but ultimately led to a safer community.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. McCurtis when my church hosted a health workshop on depression. A dear friend highly recommended him and she was spot on. As he shared his experience to the community of faith he was engaging, not overly intellectual, and helped de-stigmatize depression in the church.

Later I would come to need Dr. McCurtis's gifting for personal reasons. Not only has he exhibited the same characteristics at the health workshop he has shown compassion when dealing with delicate matters, the 'ouches'. I appreciate Dr. McCurtis's work ethic of working toward a goal and continually helping me do that self inventory of where we are in my treatment.

I strongly welcome Dr. McCurtis as one of the best psychiatrist I've ever had.

For reasons I suppose many of us know well, there are real psychological and emotional problems permeating our society and world. I like the way Henry makes himself a part of the community...the global community...and offers his knowledge, experience, insight and wisdom wherever he sees a need...and the needs are tremendous. I think of him as a hands-on intellectual and humanitarian...and I can see how his personality, style, compassion and breath of knowledge must enable him to be the kind of doctor we would all want to have. One day I hope to give you a more personal report. In the meantime, if you're seeking kind, wise, and competent mental health care...my suggestion to those in the NYC area, is to start with Dr. Henry Lloyd McCurtis.See MoreRead Less"

I was in the deep throws of depression when I found Dr. McCurtis. He was someone that I, a person that thought that he was omnipotent, and omniscient, could talk to because he was a educated brother, one possessed with knowledge equal to mine. His understanding of my dilemma, my perception of my self verses reality, enabled me to submit to his confidence, his knowledge, and above all, submit to his counseling. The results were more than I could ever imagine. He lifted me from my " rock bottom" , restored a sense of who I was based upon the real world, and what I needed to do to put my life back in order. I will be forever indebted to him in spite of the fact that I paid his fee in full. See MoreRead Less"

His practice is in general psychiatry, providing diagnostic assessment and treatment for patients with problems of living requiring psychotherapy; individual, couple, or family therapy: medication management; and 12 step facilitative psychotherapy for addictive disorders. />
He has dedicated his life to providing care at here and abroad through the highly regarded Doctors Without Borders.

I have twenty-seven years of recovery from alcohol and drug addiction and find Henry a source of healing in my life. He brings experience, strength, and hope in addition to his psychiatric skills.See MoreRead Less"

I was referred to Dr. McCurtis when I had serious withdrawal reactions to SSRI medications. Other doctors actually accused me of faking the symptoms; because the medication was not supposed to cause these reactions. His experience in Neuroscience and addiction rehabilitation was invaluable! He took my very rare symptoms seriously and we were able to slowly get me off of the problem medication, and eventually off all medication completely. Dr. McCurtis is a practical, logical, and wise individual. No new age hand holding here, just calm logic, science and practical solutions. I met Dr. McCurtis when he was Director of Residency Training at Harlem Hospital. Subsequently, we have remained colleagues as we have both treated patients privately--I would not hesitate to refer a patient to Dr. McCurtis."
