I agree with Michelle. Another thing to consider is that it is harder to kill a bad habit than to teach new things. So don;t give your dog the chance to misbehave. I always used a bench for dog training. The dog had to go there at night to sleep and during daytime when I could not watch him. Make the bench a fun place to be in. Always feed a snack or give a bone when the dog is IN the bench. However note that I feel you should not have a dog at all if you work outside the house all day. Use a bench, sufficient exersice and Michelles distraction tips and the troubles will be over after a while. My own dog goes in his bench volontary at night and when I leave. I don't even close the door and she never demolishes anything in the house.
Good luck with it.
