Not all Insurance contracts are the same. In this case, the policy language, declarations, deductibles, exclusions, exceptions, endorsements and warrenties determine your coverage. Most AAA Member Insurance policies provide some coverage for personal property under the Comprehensive portion of the Auto Policy, such as for stolen luggage or CD's and Cassette Tapes that are designed to be used in your Vehicle. When the loss exceeds the deductible and exhausts the coverage limit many clients turn to their broad form Home or Renters Insurance Policy. In this case, another deductible applies but the available Personal Property Coverage is much greater than on the Auto Policy. The most afffordable policy you can own is a Personal Contents Policy, also known as a "Renter's" policy or HO4. These can start out as low as $15 per month and cover up to $15000 in Personal Property and $100,000 in Personal Liability. -JP

You can actually recover you IPAD by tracking it through the app "find my iphone/ipad"

My friend had his stolen out of his car and they were able to track it about 60 miles away. Thay called the local police and the suspect was apprehended with his device-pretty cool!

My company covers it through personal property, whether that be a renter's policy or a homeowner's policy. You do have to consider how much your deductible is and if it is worth making a claim over as well. Be careful about carrying electronics in a car. Most companies cap electronics stolen out of vehicles at $2500 or less. It's not a good place to leave your toys as they get broken into far too easily.

Your Homeowners or renters will cover it minus your deductible first.

That would be covered under your Homeowners/Renters policy, minus your dedcutible.  Your auto policy would typically only covered something stolen out of the vehicle that was installed by the manufacturer or permanently attached to the vehicle.
